LRA linear-rotary actuators

A linear rotary actuator combines a Z (or horizontal) linear axis with a theta rotary stage on the carriage, so one part number does the lift-and-turn, pick-orient-place, cap-and-uncap, or screw-driving motion that would otherwise take two actuators and a bracket. The LYNX LRA is an LSA 45 or BSA 45 linear axis carrying a NEMA 23 rotary table, shipped as a kit with the mounting hardware.

Twelve configurations are stock. The linear axis is a lead screw (6.35 mm lead for 150 mm/s and 7 kg, or 12.7 mm for 300 mm/s and 5 kg) or a ball screw (5 mm or 10 mm lead) at 50, 100, or 250 mm of travel; the rotary table is the same N23 unit sold on its own at $495. Repeatability is ±0.025 mm linear. Pricing runs from $1,245 for the 50 mm lead-screw kit to $1,745 for the 250 mm ball-screw kit, and every kit has a quote part number in the 200227 series.

Where an LRA fits

Three applications account for most LRA orders: capping and decapping tubes in lab automation (the rotary spins the cap while the linear axis follows the thread), orienting parts before placement on a pick-and-place gantry, and small-torque fastening or dispensing where the tool must rotate while advancing. On a gantry the LRA mounts where the Z actuator would go, so the engine treats it as a Z axis with a rotary degree of freedom and sizes the linear part exactly as it would an LSA or BSA.

Choosing between the lead-screw and ball-screw version

Lead screw for cost and self-locking hold; ball screw for continuous duty, thrust, and repeatability. The rotary stage is identical. See the BSA family page for the full comparison.

Rated load and speed are catalog maximums for the configuration shown; "—" means the figure depends on the motor curve at your speed — the engine computes it. All prices are U.S. list, single quantity.

Not sure which one?

Describe the task — payload, travel, speed, orientation. The engine picks the family and the variant, shows the torque and inertia math, and prices the whole system.

Frequently asked

What is a linear rotary actuator?

A single actuator that provides linear travel and rotation about the same axis — a Z-theta stage. The LYNX LRA does it with a lead-screw or ball-screw linear axis and a stepper-driven rotary table on the carriage.

What is the rotary resolution?

The rotary table is a NEMA 23 stepper stage; resolution is set by the controller's microstepping (1.8° full step, 0.1125° at 16× microstepping). Absolute-encoder feedback is a quoted option.

Can the LRA mount on a gantry?

Yes. It takes the place of the Z actuator on an XYZ or XX'YZ gantry; the engine sizes the X and Y axes for its mass automatically.

How are the two motors controlled?

As two axes on a BLC series controller — a 4-axis BLC-4T runs an XY gantry plus both LRA motors; the kit ships with cabling specified for it.
